Artist Statement:
Feung Schwey: The Act of Being a Hero! is my take on an unconventional coming-of-age superhero story. The concept was simple: “What if a documentary crew followed a young, local superhero still trying to find his place in the world while living in the shadow of his legendary father?” This approach opened up a world of possibilities as I wrote the script with a mockumentary style in mind. Allowing the main character to interact directly with the camera created plenty of comedic moments, some of which were unscripted and became highlights of the film.
At its heart, this story is about the relationship between a father and son. I see my own father as a larger-than-life figure who inspires me daily, and I wanted to weave that feeling into the script, adding emotional depth to the hero’s journey.
Making this film was a rewarding challenge. As the Director, Writer, Producer, and Director of Photography, I approached each scene as if capturing b-roll, with multiple cameras covering the action to give the film a grounded, documentary feel. This meant carefully planning every move for both camera and sound, which brought its own set of complexities to each scene.
I’m thrilled with the final result and look forward to exploring more stories in this world!
